Honey-Ginger Sidecar #2

The other week I posted a picture of a cocktail I’ve been working on, and today I’m posting again about the Honey-Ginger Sidecar:

Here’s the thing about Frontier Mixology. This isn’t Manhattan. That’s no excuse for subpar cocktails, of course… So I’m working within a certain palate of colors and still trying to put forth only worthwhile results.

More to come about this drink… As I either perfect the recipe for the right syrup or get the bar to start stocking something like Domaine de Canton.

Bitters At The Bar!

Earlier this week I wrote about a package of bitters that arrived in the mail.

Well, here’s a shot today of them on the shelf behind the bar:

Not something the average bar customer sees up close, but I wanted to get a good shot of the bitters… So forgive the fact that you can see “behind the curtain” so to speak.

Bacardi Wolfberry Mojito

Mojitos are great in the summer, but people love variation.

Watermelon mojitos are one thing, but if I’m looking for a sweet cocktail to sip, I do love a blueberry lemonade or a Wolfberry mojito:

Bitters By Mail

Got a special delivery in the mail yesterday!

Bought ’em through the Buffalo Trace online store!

Probably going to need to order another bottle or two for the bar in a month or so, but I think that next time I’ll go through the Sazerac Company gift shop. Maybe order a t-shirt or something too!

Spiced And Stormy

I’ve been on a ginger beer kick of late.

From the traditional “Dark and Stormy” and the “Moscow Mule” to some crazy and truly inspired ideas (cilantro vodka!?), I’ve been throwing back quite a bit of the ginger brew these last few weeks.

For folks new to the beverage though, as with so many other things… I’ve found that small forays into new territory really help to get people interested and on board.

And so there’s the “Spiced and Stormy,” which is really just a small twist on the traditional “Captain & Ginger Ale.”

20130823-132232.jpg
About This Cocktail
A variation on the traditional Dark and Stormy, made tall (an extra ounce) with Captain Morgan rum in place of dark rum.

Ingredients
3 ounces of Captain Morgan
6 ounces of ginger beer
Garnish with a lime wedge or twist

Preparation
Pack a Collins glass full with ice and pour in rum, then ginger beer and finish with the lime garnish.

Big This Summer: Watermelon Mojito

People go crazy for this drink each spring and summer, whenever we first get fresh watermelon in.

It started a few years back, when the bar where I work started mixing Bacardi Dragon Berry into mojitos and serving them with strawberries. Then came the watermelon, which people sometimes seem to fiend for. We get asked about it all year round:

Ingredients
2 ounces white rum
4 to 6 mint leave
4 to 6 watermelon pieces

A honey-ginger sidecar I’m working on:

It tasted alright, but it looks more like a lemon martini here in this picture.

Bols Genever

I bought a bottle of Bols Gnever on Saturday.

20130819-000352.jpg
I took a sip before leaving for work. It was my first time ever tasting the liquor.
Here’s the rundown from Liquor.com:

ABOUT BOLS GENEVER
Founder: Jacobus Bols
Year Founded: 1575
Distillery Location: Zoetermeer, Holland
Master Distiller / Blender: Piet van Leijenhorst
BOLS GENEVER ESSENTIAL FACTS
Bols has been making genever in Holland since 1664.
While English gin is now very popular in America, back in the 19th century the malty Dutch version (genever) was a best seller. Many of the cocktails that are currently made with gin were originally made with genever.
Bols Genever was reintroduced to America in 2008.

About Frontier Mixology

FRONTIER MIXOLOGY is a blog about cocktails.

Here’s what I’m envisioning:

  • Posting about the things that interest me.
  • Cataloging cocktail recipes here as I learn them.
  • Re-posting cocktail news/info/research as I feel necessary, so that I have it to come back to later.

FRONTIER MIXOLOGY: Cocktails from the wilds of Western New York.
